ALL cameras deal with optics. It is optical elements in the lens that allows an image to transfer to the film / sensor.
I think you may be confusing optical zoom with digital zoom. Optical zoom is a function of the lens. Digital zoom is a FAKE zoom. A center spot of the sensor is enlarged electronically. The results are usually NOT good. Always use OPTICAL zoom, NOT digital zoom.
Not sure when the first color films began to be used.
