GGS LCD Screen Protector – Canon 50D

This video shows the steps for installing a GGS brand LCD screen protector for digital cameras. My camera is a Canon 50D. It's a glass cover designed to keep your LCD screen free from scratches. You'll also see a before/after comparison on the Canon 50D. The video (and some audio) was shot using a Canon Digital Rebel T1i (500D). The poor-sounding audio was dubbed from a low quality PC mic (sorry!) Check www.nodnarb.net for the full review.

Would you buy a voice-controlled camera, or perhaps a DSLR with touchsceen?
Do you talk to your digital camera? Perhaps stroke its glossy LCD? If a pair of recent patent applications are any indication, those mildly creepy gestures might one day actually do something. Sony's just laid claim to a DSLR touchscreen that can be manipulated by thumb even while the rest of one's face is smushed up against the viewfinder, and Canon's got its eye on technology that lets ...

@drseang : I haven’t had to remove mine yet, so I can’t tell you for sure. The instructions say to use a non-sharp thin material (a credit card, for instance) to pry the protector from the LCD. It doesn’t seem like removing it would be too difficult.

how easy and simple is it to remove the cover? i’m worried that the adhesive may damage the original lcd

@jovianksc :
1) I haven’t tried to remove my screen protector yet, so I can’t tell you for sure. The directions say to use something thin, such as a credit card, to separate it along the edges. I’ve had it on almost a year now and it’s remained relatively scratch free. It has done it’s job well. 2) I chose it because I’m more concerned about damage to the LCD from impact than small scratches from normal use. I don’t think the clear plastic ones would protect from any sort of impact.

two questions:
1. how easy is it to remove the screen protector? cause i assume at some point the protector is going to be scratched and you would want to replace that?
2. why would you choose GGS protector over the flexible plastic ones sold on ebay?

Bought one for my Nikon since I’m accident prone.., got mine on ebay for $4.95

thanks for uploading this video…
it was really helpful

Can you post where you found that? I haven’t had a lot of luck finding good parts.
I think one reason could be the time and complexity required to replace it. I don’t know how easy or hard it is to do, but a lot of people would be put off by disassembling their camera, especially if it’s still under warranty.

Brandon the Canon replacement cover for the 50D is $11.62. Why bother to put a cover on this cover?
June 10th, 2010 - 08:50
i received my 50d yesterday and have also been given this protector as a free gift for buying the camera, looks pretty cool and great to see a vid tutorial on this, makes it easier to see someone else do it first

I don’t know why, but my guess would be to cut costs. Canon doesn’t even give you lens hoods unless you buy their top of the line lenses.
June 10th, 2010 - 09:26
why doesn’t it come with a top LCD protector like D300 models?
June 10th, 2010 - 09:46
Not that I know of. There’s a lot of stuff advertised claiming to be able to do it, but I’ve never used any of those myself. If the scratch is big, you may need to send in your camera.

Hey, there. Thanks for the video, it was awesome. I have a question; If your camera already has a scratch on the screen, can you remove it by some sort of stuffs ?.
June 10th, 2010 - 11:00
Informative and well produced. Thanks for the info!

That’s a good question, Yellowknight888. It’s definitely subject to scratches. The point of buying and installing this is so it gets scratched rather than your camera’s LCD. When it’s too scratched, just buy another one to replace it. The instructions say it can be removed easily with a card, like a credit card. I haven’t tried it, of course, but that seems pretty plausible.
June 10th, 2010 - 12:54
I don’t really get it, if it’s glass, wouldn’t it be subjected to scratches as well? And if I do get scratches or even a crack on the protector, wouldn’t it still be a fuss to try to remove and replace it?

Thanks! The little tripod definitely came in handy. The weight of the camera was almost too much for it, though.
June 10th, 2010 - 14:46
Great instructional video! I need a little tripod like you’re using.
